Motorola Talkabout 2-Way Radios

Motorola makes great two-way radios (they have a huge share of public service radio) and these little radios are a good deal at $22. You have to ignore all of the numbers you see for range (these claim 27 miles). None of these radios, with their tiny output, can be receive over much more than a mile and that is if there is no obstructions. Those figures you see for 20 and 30 miles are over salt water which provides an unobstructed path as well as an ideal ground plane to reflect the signal. My $500 ham radio hand-held can't go 27 miles and it puts out 7 watts instead of a fraction of a watt.
