They can damage your DNA but if your not planning on having kids I'm sure it will be fine.

Ever see those powder-blue lights shining up at the ceiling in some fast food restaurants? That's the same UVC light emitted by this wand, killing all sorts of microbes right in the air. The death rays are actually invisible. The visible blue light is just a byproduct. Great price, BTW!

Hey, fluffy!...from my experience they ARE safe. We stayed a month in the Dominican Republice 18 months ago and used one of these for our coffee: http://www.steripen.com/traveler Thanks for explaining the science behind this!:)

Oh, they are definitely safe - you just want to minimize your own exposure to the rays. If you deliberately held it over your hand for a couple minutes, you would definitely feel a burn shortly afterwards. Eyes are even more sensitive. Thanks for the link to the SteriPen! I haven't seen that form before, but I'll wait for a deal on it.

In case anyone is thinking this is right up there with crystals & amulets, these really do work, though a unit this small is only practical to cover small areas like your desk, unless you have a LOT of time on your hands. The technology is tried & true and has been in use for decades, just not typically portable. Here a link to the science behind it, if you dare: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thymine_dimers

I think uv can be quite bad for you if you look right at it or lick it.

It is definitely not good to expose your eyes or skin to the UVC light that this emits, but this unit has a positional switch in it that shuts off the lamp unless it is held horizontally and shining downwards. Of course, that doesn't stop anyone from holding it over their face while lying down, but it minimizes accidental exposure.

As a matter of fact, yes! You might also try wearing a pair of ruby red slippers...and click your heels together, while repeating..."THERE'S NO PLACE LIKE HOME!"...."THERE'S NO PLACE LIKE HOME!"...THERE'S NO PLACE LIKE HOME!".......
