These guidelines, based on recommendations by the 2010 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee, are intended to be used in developing educational materials and aiding policymakers in designing and carrying out nutrition-related programs. The document provides information on how the guidelines were developed; describes the current overweight and obesity epidemics; and provides recommendations for building healthy eating patterns, balancing calories to manage weight, reducing less healthy foods and food components, increasing healthier foods and nutrients, and helping Americans make healthy choices. The guidelines include tables, figures and references.
