Q: Airline miles

Anybody ever sold airline miles to one of those quasi-legal brokers?  If so...how did it go?  Was it worth the hassle?  I have about 68000 miles (which is the biggest joke in incentives, you can hardly ever use them unless you travel at odd times or have eleventybillion points).  I'm considering dumping them on Points.com as well.  I wanna get rid of the points and cancel the card before I have to renew the card (and the "service" fee).

I would use Google to find reviews of those sites and then sell your points to one that is trustworthy. Are your points transferable?

Really, no points are transferable (as far as I can tell). The Companies I've looked at find a "buyer" who then gives you his/her information and you purchase the ticket with your points in their name and they reimburse you for up to 1 1/2 cent per mile.

I emailed 2 of the companies for information. One responded back and told me that they would need to access my account...I would have to supply my username and password so they could verify my information/number of miles, etc. You can imagine how willing I was to do so. ;-)

The other told me they would be in contact when they found a buyer that needed my number of miles...but like I said before, unless you have a lot of miles, you really can't use them for much besides off hours discounts.

I'm thinking I'ma wind up selling them to points.com. It is really the only card approved means of selling points. I wont get the rate the other avenues promise, but I'll get something for my points.

I am on the same boat with you. I don't have a whole lot of points, just a little over 20,000 but can't seem to use them either . They expire in Feb 2013. There is just no flexibility in using them. Odd times, limited flights, etc.

With those few points, your best bet would be to use Points.com as you have mentioned. I've used them to swap for gift cards at Best Buy. Some airlines require a certain minimum to swap out. Also check out the airline website. You could probably redeem them for magazines, newspapers or donate them.
