I need some suggestions and reviews from people who either own one or know about telescopes. I am looking to buy one for my husband and i have absolutely no clue how to pick a good one or infact start looking for one. I am willing to spend upto $300, so any suggestions are highly appreciated.

I would suggest a Celestron that fits within that price range. They are a good brand and you get a good value for your dollar. If he has preference for a reflector vs a refractor you could choose on or the other (glass objective vs mirror). But, if you spend about $300 on a Celestron I think he will be very happy.

This one is about $220 or so and is generally on sale for about that price. The retail is closer to $400.

Thanks Eric. I will focus my search pn the brand you mentioned and since its a surprise for my husband i cant ask him for too much information. I saw the link you provided and it looks good. I will read the reviews to see what people have to say.

Reflector types are best for viewing celestial bodies. If he's wanting to view...say animals at Yellowstone...a refractor is better.

I'm assuming that since your budget is 300, you are lloking for a relector?

@nthsll - I absolutely have no clue in the difference between the 2 but all I can tell is that he would love one for viewing celestial bodies so it sounds like reflector is the one I should get! I guess I will look for a Reflector type based on your comment and one from Celestron based on Eric's comment and look around on amazon.

I have a lot of experience with telescopes... in Sims. :/ Anyhow, you're a wonderful wife for thinking this through for your husband :)

Relector telescopes are like the one in the picture Erick posted. You look into the side of a big tube. Refractors have an eye piece in the end like how you would look through binculars.

Depends on the purpose. Is he looking at stars or spying on neighbors? haha. Just kidding ;)
