Anyone know where I can get a slightly better than entry-level sound bar for an HDTV at below-entry-level price?

If you have a CompUSA near you (recently purchased by TigerDirect), I would try there. At my local store they often have overstocked items (anything from TVs to computer accessories) from warehouses for ridiculously cheap prices.

check out the clearances ( at the stores ). I got mine at Target at 50% off. Got another one at best buy at 75% off. Do the leg work and you can find great deals.

What brand(s) are the best quality? I found some cheap ones at Walmart, iLive. Anyone have any experience with that brand?

iLive soundbar ($49 ) at Target is OK, I got one for my daughter, she uses it for the radio.

Sony or Samsung are better.

I agree with @encorez that Sony and Samsung are much better (with Boss and Klipsch EVEN better). But with that comes a heavy price tag, though you may be lucky to find some on clearance.

If you're looking for good quality with a lower price tag, I'd personally recommend Polk Audio.
