Based on this..
Q - What happens if I join a server that has a mix of base game maps and Back to Karkand maps, and I don’t have Back to Karkand?
A – You will still be able to join the server, but when a Back to Karkand map loads, you will be disconnected from the server. (from https://help.ea.com/article/battlefield-3-back-to-karkand-expansion-pack-information)
