Q: Do you use much cash these days?

I'm puzzled by the long lines of people waiting to use the ATMs at a nearby bank, all day, every day. Plastic and electronic debits are accepted practically everywhere. Why not skip the ATM altogether? I use virtually no cash.

People don't go to ATM's just for withdrawing cash .. they could also be making deposits (checks or cash) ... even worse, some could just be checking their accounts' balances.

I always like to have a little cash in my pocket, some places just dob't accept credit card or debits. like the deli on the corner or a small food stand.

Some stores won't accept credit cards unless you spend a certain amount, because they get charged a fee for using the service. (i'm talking about little mom and pop shops.)

...or whatever baldieee09 said could be the reason also.

i used to always use cash only..i didn't like using my credit card..i feel like too many people nowadays lose their sense of value and all they see is plastic..it's so easy to just swipe..but do you really have the funds to pay for it. for some..no!

no..i tend to use my credit card a lot..due to the fact of cash back rewards and all that.

in general, though..i still think society isn't good at saving money....once they get money..they spend it..or at least a good amount of it..just sayin'..not trying to offend..

When I did use mostly cash, much of it would evaporate into thin air without a trace. With credit cards, I got a record of all expenses plus cash rewards. When I practically stopped using cash, I found that much of the evaporation was due to my wife and oldest son just "borrowing" $10 for gas, or $5 to ride the metro.

@skaro964: Definitely! My wife shops at a number of small international food stores, and one of them ran the same transaction twice on the same day. They corrected it when I showed them the card statement, but I wonder if it really was an accident.

BofA lets you deposit through their ATM so sometimes that's why I'm at the ATM.
I feel like it's easier to keep track of money when I use cash - swiping's just too easy.
Cash IS nice for flea markets or other places you can haggle with cash :P

I was in NY a couple weeks ago to see a Broadway show..inside it was cash only for their ridiculously priced drinks and snacks...and to top it off..no ATM in the whole building...and this was in TIMES SQUARE..

Just a FYI, banks are testing out a monthly fee program for using your ATM. I seen it on the news. A quick search on google and I found this link:

@solowkoe: I recently got a letter from one of my banks that they were adding both a monthly account maintenance fee and a monthly ATM/debit card usage fee! They don't kick in for a couple of months, but I will definitely be saying goodbye before then. It's pretty painless to switch banks.
