I think that the term jailbreaking is the definition of unlocking. Apple always seems to be able to figure out if you unlocked your phone. They do sell some of their older iPhones unlocked.

Jailbreaking has nothing to do with unlocking. They are two entirely different things. Not sure why anyone wouldnt want to jailbreak though, its kind of a big deal.

What encorez is talking about only applies if youre out of contract. They will not unlock your phone unless youre out of your contract or you pay an ETF. If your contract with ATT is up you can unlock it simply by using iTunes. ATT no longer sim locks iphones out of contract since their exclusive deal with Apple has ended.
