If you like to use your laptops for long periods of time, I would, but if you aren't, don't get it. Waste of money. My laptop happens to get pretty hot on the counter when I use it for a while, and if its overheated, it will break. So I would play it safe if I were you and get it.

I know that as technology advances the problem of laptops overheating grows less, but I have always used them. They're not expensive, so I have just seen them as a way to prolong the life of my laptop.

I would recommend one eventually, but its not necessary for a new computer. New computers will have a strong fan and will cool themselves very well early in the computers life, especially a MAC. However, as dust collects and the computer ages, the fan will be less effective and can cause damage to your computer. I had an issue with my computer overheating to the point where it would shut down, all because the fan was not working very well do to the dust collection.

You can try http://savecreatively.com/LaptopBatteryCare.aspx
They had some helpful tips for laptop battery care and choosing what's best.

If you have it on all day, i would invest in one or just elevate them on some cooling balls you can get at Meritline, they're cheap. They're just half of a ball you can put on the bottom to just give it more airflow.Or you can just use some water bottle caps, they're free. Lugging around a cooling mat or fan is just something else i rather not carry.

I would say they can't hurt and they're typically cheap if you watch for a deal. But are they necessary. Not until you've had the laptop for a while. The internal fans are meant to keep it cool enough.
