Q: What is the best cell phone?

My son and I currently have at&t.  I am eligible for an upgrade (gave my son the last two). I currently have an LG phone (don't make fun) and need this upgrade. I am currently unemployed, so need to utlize free upgrade if poss. What phone is best for texting, data usage, etc? Any ideas on the best rate plan for us? Unlimited text, data usage, rollover minutes, etc? Trying to stay under $130 per month if possible.

Are you asking for best phone on the market or best phone for that price range? I was going to tell you obviously go with an iPhone but don't think it's possible to stay under $130 for two. As for other phones, I am not aware.
Unlimited text usually runs you about $30 - data will be about $15-25 per phone and minutes. I would suggest going to ATT.com to check it.

I just switched from AT&T to T-Mobile, it's a lot cheaper.

Anyway, back on topic, the Galaxy S III is the best phone on the planet at the moment (in my opinion). It's $200 with contract though, so for something cheaper, I'd suggest the following:

Galaxy S II, $99 (I have this phone, it's fast and beautiful)
iPhone 4 (refurbed), $49 (save a whole lot over the 4S)

I'm biased for android, but I would suggest you stay with Apple or Samsung for the manufacturer. My experience is that the others aren't made as well.

Also, another option is a windows phone, I've heard good things about them as well.

If you haven't guessed, I'm really basing suggestions on the operating system (OS) as much as anything. After you get used to the system and buy a few apps, it hurts to change, so I'd pick the OS you want first. I would pick the best phone you can afford for whatever OS you choose. I'd be happy to share the reasons I prefer Android over iOS ;)

If you are unemployed, you may want to weigh how necessary a cell is, unless, of course, you don't have a landline, have kids, etc. So far I have gotten by w/o a cell and I work around 35 hours plus have school and kids. :)

I agree with Dealwagger. We have created such a need for convenience as the cost to own a cell phone dramatically increases. I don't have data on my phone and I refuse to pay an extra $30-$40/ month to have it. You can probably downsize to a texting phone if you must have cell phone and that shaves off a lot of cost.

The problem with questions like this is that you're never going to really get an unbiased legit answer. So I'm here to give you one as we just upgraded 2 lines on my family plan. My daughter got the HTC one x a few months ago on the launch date. Listen, we can't tell you what you like. You need to get the phone in your hands. This is like buying a slr camera or a handgun without holding it in your hand. The one x is a stacked phone, I'm not into the beats marketing hyped overpriced headphones thing but musically the one x is the best phone I have listened to yet and that includes the previous 3 iPhones I've had. Yeah the Galaxy is a nice phone and has some solid specs but at the same time it still has plenty of problems just like the previous galaxies. Still overheats, still has major battery drain when searching for networks, lots of microphone problems being reported as well as
Massive reports of poor ability to hold a
Wifi connection as well as charging issues. The galaxy 2 was trash, I'm sorry if you're a fan boy of samsung but while the hype around this phone caught alot of people it still has many bugs and problems. My wife got the galaxy last week. Ive been away for two weeks so while I'll stick with it being one of the top 2 phones on the market I'll test out that theory when I go home in a few days.

What am I saying? While the consensus is the galaxy is the king there are other phones out there as solid or better in certain aspects. What works for you might not be what the rest I'd the world is praising.
