Which such a large and diverse group of folks on dealspl.us I would like to know how your ISP does for Internet connect & speeds.  I live in Maryland and have Comcast for TV & Internet.  I pay about $95 a month for expanded, digital cable, and I get about 20MB down and 6MB up.  I am actually quite happy with our local version of Comcast.  Anyway, curious how other folks do - especially if you have FIOS (not available in my  neighborhood yet).

That seems like a pretty good deal. I have Comcast also but I pay a bit more (Pennsylvania) but not a lot more. I am happy with my service as well.

I call Comcast every six months and negotiate a new deal. It helps that I am willing to cancel my tv service. If I didn't do that my tv package plus Internet would be about $50 higher.

You can test your speeds here for free http://speedtest.net/
Ignore the ads and click the green "begin test" button.

My parents have the optimum online triple play. I'm guessing they pay around $90/month for all three. I think they may get additional free perks like the Chinese channel (zzz...) at least for now.
Last time I checked the connection by wifi, they were downloading at 12 MB and uploading at 5 MB. It might be time to change the router too... it's been at least 4 years.

Sidenote for anyone who has noticed that their internet has been slowing down tremendously and can't figure out why - it may be your cable modem. We had one that seemed to be ancient and I noticed during one winter break back from college. I was suffering at a 60 kbps (Yep. That's right.) I contacted Optonline through chat and he asked me to go to the speedtest site akaricke mentioned and asked me for the speed. I told him I'd tell him if the page would load...
TL;DR - Optimum changed my cable modem for free since we were with them for a LONG time. Speeds improved.

I'm in Maryland and I have Verizon FiOS bottom level service with 15mb down/5mb up. The online speed tests usually show very slightly above those numbers. I pay $54.99/month. It was $49.99 for the first year, went up to $59.99 the next, but they lopped $5/mo off for committing to another year. I don't subscribe to TV or phone through Verizon. There are no taxes or fees added on when you get only internet.

I've never had any problems with the service or its speed, which is more than I can say from when I had Comcast. I have 5 desktop computers, several laptops, a Wii, 2 smartphones, 5 VoIP lines and 4 security cameras running on it. We can be watching Netflix, have the kids on each of the desktops, and have not the slightest impairment on multiple simultaneous VoIP calls.

The speed and price are still an abomination compared to what you can get in South Korea and Japan, where 100mb is around $25/mo.

arsiel is correct about cable modems. If yours is very old you should swap it out with your cable company or a buy a new one that is DOCSIS 3.0 compliant.
