External drives that run off USB power alone tend to be significantly slower transferring data. If it is mainly for backup or extra storage purposes, you're better off with a desktop external hard drive with its wall wart. Some USB-powered drives also need two USB ports to have enough power to operate, which is something to consider.

@fluffy, I did not know that but the purpose of the HD I had was for it to be portable. It was nice to have it in a small pouch and just go - no bulky adapters to carry around.
I had the Western Digital Elements SE (until I lost it somewhere... still MIA) 1 TB. It ran on USB 2.0 though. No problems. My boyfriend has the sleeker looking, more current one called the Passport. Runs on 3.0/2.0 and if you can get a deal on it for 1 TB, should be around $85

The 64GB USB thumb drives are ~$25 sometimes on sale. That's another good option if you don't need 100's of GBs.

I bought 250GB USB HD at Target for $15 each...I took all they had..7 of them. They are all good, any brand name at the cheapest price works.

It would be really nice to get a good deal on some kind of external hard drive with like 1 tb that doesnt need to be plugged in if anyone makes such a thing.
