I use Tivo with Direct TV only because I purchased a lifetime Tivo membership (years ago when they offered it. . .looks like they still do for $399.00). Anyway, since Direct TV offers their own DVR service there is no need to purchase a TIVO subscription. You can shop the cost of both to see which is less expensive (note that you have to have a Direct TV box regardless if it has the DVR feature. . .$53.99 for the Total Choice Monthly platform, HD access is $10.00 a month, $5.00 a month for every receiver past the 1st one you own). . .the DVR service is $6.00 a month. So it's $6.00 a month for DirectTV DVR vs. $10.00 a month for TIVO (DVR) on the 1 year up front payment. Other option is to purchase the lifetime TIVO membership and hope your box lasts a long time. For what it's worth my TIVO box is 6 years old and still works (the color is jacked up but for "free" DVR in the bedroom.)

I have DirecTV and enjoy it. I basically have it for sports and HD. You can't find a better carrier for either. I believe Tivo's are alright but not that much better than any other DVR's. They may be better for those that need their "hand held" and can't figure out technology on their own. That however is not most people that would frequent a website like this.
