Five Gadget Gifts Ideas for Men for Any Occasion

40
I have loved gadgets as far back as I can remember.  I can't think of a male friend who doesn't also love gadgets.  With that in mind I have some suggestions for males for birthdays, anniversaries, Christmas, Father's Day (which is not until June) for those of you that struggle to find dad, boyfriend, friend, partner, boss, or your husband something interesting.  I have tried to suggest items that are a little outside the boxso you won't see cameras, mp3 players, smartphone, GPS, iPads, etc. To make this a bit more authentic, I own all five of these items and they are all great. You should probably be able to find that your much-loved male is lacking at least one of these five gadgets.

High Powered Laser Pointers:  These you have to buy overseas but I bought one for about $80 that can burn balloons, light a match, etc.  They can be dangerous but they can be very entertaining.  You can get from places like LazerPointand you can also google for more sites that sell them.  A lot of guys don't have this gadget because you can't go to the mall and get one or Amazon, etc.  Anything sold in the U.S. has to have an output power of 5mw or less.  The one I bought is 150mw.

Weather Station:  You can buy wireless weather stations these days that provide temperature, pressure, humidity, wind speed, and rainfall for $100 on sale and around $150 otherwise.  These are not toys - they work great and should provide years of service.  I've had one for about five years that is still working great (mine is not wireless but I'm working on that).  You can buy them from Amazon and usually get a great price.  Here is a suggestion from Ambient Weatheranother nice one from LaCrosse Technology. Both of these are usually on sale for around a hundred bucks.  You can also check out Oregon Scientific and Davis Instruments.

Internet Radio:  These are great. I have one from Aluratek.  It's basically a radio that connects to your wifi router and brings in radio stations from all over the world. New stations are constantly being added and right now I can choose from among 18,000 stations.  I live in Maryland but I love listening to a sports show in New York on 660am - piece of cake with my Internet radio.  You can also do other things such as connect to a flash drive with music on it and listen to regular local FM radio.  But listening to a talk show in Australia or trains coming into Vancouver is a blast (they have scanner stations as well).  Search Amazon for them to see many choices. The Aluratek I bought can be found HERE. I bought it over a year ago for about $130 but they are down to $90 now.  It is pictured below.

Metal Detectors:  I've had several over the years.  I currently have a Bounty Hunter that I paid about $250 for three years ago.  You can use these anywhere and while you might not find a treasure trove of priceless Grecian coins, you will find some cool stuff.  I find mostly small change and interesting trinkets.  I did find a whole bunch of civil war bullets while visiting in Hagerstown, MD. one summer.  Search Amazon or other online stores for a good model.  You should probably spend (ignore retail prices) at least $150 to get something reasonable and $250 to get something really good.  Here is a good model to consider.

Telescope:  Not something that requires an observatory but a small 'scope that you can easily carry outside and look at the moon, bright planets, and some easier-to-see constellations.  For this gift idea I'm suggesting spending only about $40.  If he really gets into astronomy let him figure out what four, five, or six digit (yeah, thousand of dollars) outfit he wants to buy.  I got this Celestron First Scopefor Christmas.  It's about $40 and you can carry it under one arm, take it outside, plop it on the hood of your car, and start doing some star gazing.  It is pictured below.

Hopefully one of our female members could write the same article to help us guys with gift buying for our special women when we want to also think a little outside the box :) I can help you if you have the ideas but not crazy about the writing and the HTML formatting.

Be careful with the laser pointer. 150mw is way above the legal limit, if cops catch you with it, it could be a ticket to a misdemeanor depending on state. If you shine it to the sky at night and accidentally blind a pilot, that is up to 25 years in federal prison - that exact incident happened 2 years ago by John Wayne airport - National Security went door by door and pinpointed the guy...he got 15 years. I personally would not mess around with it. In California, I would rather be caught smoking marijuana while driving than shining that laser pointer.

but that thing is indeed pretty damn cool. We used to shine it while dirtbiking in the desert - you can see the dot over 10 miles away. Insane!
