Microsoft Tablet?

40

Rumors are whizzing at just under the speed of light that Microsoft will announce their own tablet this Monday, June 18th,  at an event in L.A at 3:30pm.  They have apparently gone to a great deal of trouble to keep everything about this project super secret.  Even though the event is very, very soon,  they have yet to tell the folks they invited where the event will be held.

Timothy Cook, Apple's CEO, has said that tablets would become more important than pc's and notebooks in the not-too-distant future.  So, Microsoft may have decided that this is one train they don't want to miss.  While Microsoft has been hellish successful with the xBox franchise, they have mostly failed with hardware - most recently with the Zune.

The tablet is supposedly being built by Microsoft - an entirely inside job.  That may mean that they are not simply cobbling something together from parts  sourced here and there.  It is rumored to have an ARM processor. One would also hope that building it in-house would mean a well-designed product that works well and is elegant.  Apple has set that bar pretty high.

The table would use a version of Windows 8 known as Windows RT and, according to the rumors, use the mobile Metro interface.  The only references/guesses to the size of the tablet that I could find was 7".  I would find that disappointing.  If they really want to go up against Apple (and maybe they don't initially want to do so) a 10" tablet would make more sense.

Microsoft does have an executive, Steven Sinofsky, in charge of tablets.  Perhaps that has meant hardware was coming and not just software.  It beefs up the rumors a little, anyway.

TheWrap seems to be the source of some of the most recent rumors and they claim they have talked to folks that are currently working for Microsoft.  That, too, would add some credence to the rumors.  You can click on the link to get their version.

Some rumors focus on the notion that the tablet would be more of a gaming platform than a typical tablet.  That might make sense given the success of the xBox line of gaming consoles.

While the rumors may be flying, I've not been able to find a single photo, drawing, or mockup of the rumored tablet.

The event takes place in L.A. at 3:30pm PDT on Monday.  I guess we'll know for sure then.  This is a hard one to figure out.  It would be a huge surprise if Microsoft really does announce a tablet and I think it would be pretty cool if they did.  Competition is good.

This is the first time I've heard of this and it's happening Monday? I will listen for news of it in the evening (I guess this is going to be around 7:30pm for us on east coast). Nice article and thanks for the news.

i agree, if they want to go head to head with apple, they gotta make a 10" or perhaps their going after the smaller tablet market. the amazon fire is doing pretty good, so is the nook.

I agree MrB. A 7" tablet would be unsatisfying.

Damn! This could be really big! I don't care if you like Apple or Microsoft or hate both. We need something to shake up things up in tech. I hope they do bring out a tablet.

At $85 for the operating system there's no way they will be able to compete against Google and Apple

It's their OS, it's not like when Dell pays a license to Microsoft. Their costs will be the hardware, primarily.

What do you folks think? I am curious as to how many of you think that Microsoft really will introduce a tablet, will it be any good, or will it not matter because Apple essentially owns the tablet market at this point.

It would be pretty amazing if Microsoft came out with a tablet that was as good or better than the iPad. Apple has set the bar pretty high. It makes Monday's announcement all the more interesting.

Especially if it has the same functionality as the PS Vita where you can play your xbox games on the tablet. That right there could mean a huge market for it. Id be all over it if it could do that.
