Robots That Want To Live With You And Make Your Life Easier (even your cats!)
The age of robotics, as a practical device for the home, is here. The first that comes to mind for most people is iRobot and their line of carpet sweepers (there is no suction so you can't really call them vacuum cleaners). They also make robots for cleaning your gutters and mopping your kitchen floor. There are other robots, lesser known, that are invading our home and making life a little easier. Here are some of the 'bots that want to come and live with you. Roomba: iRobots ubiquitous line of carpet sweepers. iRobot.
Scooba:iRobot again, this one mops and vacuums at the same time. iRobot.
Looj: An odd name for a robot but this one, also by iRobot, cleans gutters. iRobot.
ConnectR: This was a new one to me but a great robot gadget. It communicates for you when you are not home. You can operate it remotely to move around your house and show you what's going on via the onboard webcam. Yet another iRobot offering. Learn more about this one by clicking here
LG V-R4000: iRobot does not have a monopoly on cleaning robots though I could see why many might think so. LG has a very nice carpet cleaning robot of their own that gets very good ratings. Go to this pageto learn more about LG 'bots. They seem to have more than one so dig around a bit.
Trilobite: Electrolux, a fantastic name in vacuum cleaners, has a robot as well, though it is a very pricey beast at over $1,000. I saw prices from right around $1,000 to $1,800. A good description of the Tribolite can be found by clicking here.
Robomow: There have been a great many attempts to make a lawn mowing robot over the last 40 years but most were just too cumbersome and some were downright dangerous. Friendly Robotics seems to have figured it out with this great mower 'bot. They have several models; learn more about them by clicking here.
Agent 007: This is a security robot manufactured (born?) by MobileRobots. It patrols, can warn people to stay away or shout "freeze!" It can also deliver drinks to your guests. A versatile robot and looks like a lot of fun. It is less slick looking than other robots but very cool none-the-less. Learn more about all of their robots here.
Roboboa: Not sure if this really qualifies as a robot but it is a very cool gadget so I have included it. It's a lamp, an alarm clock, and a bit of a toy. It has a kinda sci-fi look to it and perhaps could be a pretend alien for your home. I'm not sure if it is made by WowWee or simply distributed by them. Learn more about this alien 'bot by clicking here.
Litter-Bot: Yup, this 'bot sifts through litter and removes clumps. It's a bit more intelligent than the mechanical litter boxes that simply rake through the litter. This 'bot even puts the clumps in a bag. At about $340 it is not an inexpensive solution for scooping your catbox but certainly a novel one. Comes in three colors. Find out more about expensive litter scooping here. ![]() Windoro: This robot cleans windows. It uses microfibre cloths and can clean for two hours on a single charge. You know, a lot maids "don't do windows" but Windoro would love to come live with you and do all of your windows. Go hereto learn how to part with a bit over $500 to get your windows squeaky clean.
There are so many more but this is a good start. Please leave comments about particularly interesting robots that you know of or are actually using. If your robot is terribly interesting i will add it to this Page. |

I had a Trilobite, worked great then when it broke is was to rare and hard to get parts for, I have 5 iRobots 500's and 5 400's, they all clean my house and garage. Had 6 Scooba and every tank broke on them. sold them on e-bay. Eric you forgot the best new one out there, and I will get one when prices come down, http://www.target.com/p/Neato-Robotics-XV-12-Vacuum-System-White/-/A-13591488 |
