The New iPad (3) Is Here And It Has Some Great Specs. iPad 2 Drops In Price.

I should start by noting that I am not an Apple fan and I don't buy their products but I do admire some of the products and they clearly, for now, own the tablet market.

Interestingly, Apple chose not to name the new iPad.  It's simply "iPad."  It's not the iPad 3 or the iPad HD or anything other than iPad.

It does have the 1080p resolution that was expected and it is still a 9.7" display - some had thought they might go to a slightly larger 10" display.

The iPad has now has 4G LTE capability so it can cruise the superhighway of wireless Internet speeds.  It is also using a speedy new A5X chip.  The X stands for quad core graphics so you should expect better & speedier graphics on the new screen.  However, it is not really a quad core chip but Apple does say that it is four times faster than the previous chip used in the iPad 2.

The new iPad weighs in at 1.5lbs and is just a tad under 10mm thick so it's skinny & lightweight.  That's a big plus for folks who will be holding it upright for long periods of time while, say, reading an eBook.

Here is the new lineup.

Wifi Only
$499 for 16GB, $599 for 32GB, $699 for 64GB.

Wireless
$629 for 16GB, $729 for 32GB, $829 for 64GB.

So, wireless capability (and 4G) will add an additional $130 to the base price and that seems pretty reasonable.

The iPad 2 models will all drop $100 according to what I saw at the online presentation.  This means you can buy a 16GB iPad 2 for $399.  That is sure to spark some price competition with Android tablets that already have to come in at a lower price to compete with Apple.  Now, they will have to come in a bit lower.

I would love to play with one just for the fun of it but I already tried a tablet and while it was fun, it didn't do anything, for me, that my notebook couldn't do better. I didn't have any real need that a tablet would handle. But, I expect that to change over time as more applications come out and tablets can do as much, or nearly as much, as a notebook. But, I do think they are very cool gadgets and I wouldn't turn down one as a gift.

Wow. That's quite a jump in price for 32GB more memory. ;-)
