1. The 30 rule: If it is a big purchase, or if it is a new "fad", wait 30 days and if you want to still buy it, buy it, but if not, don't.

2. DON'T BUY BOTTLED WATER!: this is in caps, and I did that on purpose. Not only are bottles bad for the environment, but water is free! Stop wasting your money on those bottles and get it from your own tap. That might mean buying a water bottle, but that's a one time purchase.

3. Shop for holiday stuff after the holiday: How often have we all seen holiday decorating stuff extremely cheap after holidays and passed it up, but then bought the same stuff right before the holiday the next year? It is a great way to save.

4. Make a shopping list: When I go grocery store shopping, I tend to buy a lot of stuff that I don't need. Making a shopping list prevents those unneeded purchases.

5. Fill your tires with air, and check frequently: The average car is 5 to 10 PSI below where its supposed to be, and that makes you loose 2.5% to 5% of your gas mileage.

6. Get a crock pot, and use it: Crock pots are not only a time saver, but a money saver, because you can put in your ingredients before work, and come home to your dinner all ready. Its so easy and there is a huge selection of recipes online.

These are so great, but I think the best is the first one. I use that trick with my high heel addiction, but I take it to at least waiting until the next day (sleep on it) or up to three days. If I am still thinking about it just as enthusiastically, I will find a deal to soften the blow. Most of the time I find that I purposefully overlook negatives like the style or fit, durability, etc. and save my money for something I do need.

Great Tips - I really agree with the Crock-Pot idea - a lot of times my only energy of the day is in the morning - if I go ahead and plan ahead and can get everything in the crock-pot and cooking first thing in the morning then I have a nice home-cooked meal for the family at dinner time - when I am normally too pooped to cook! :)

Also never go grocery shopping with an empty stomach. You tend to splurge and end up buying more than necessary. I learned if the hard way. Great article!

Also: use coupons! But to get the most out of them, you'll want to stockpile some coupons for a couple of weeks from the Sunday papers first, then only use them when they're on sale.

#3 is not just for Christmas, but for any holiday... If you have your heart set on a decor item but can't justify spending that much for it, check out its price shortly after the holiday, or a few weeks later. This is how I got the majority of my Christmas decorations, including a $30 advent calendar I later found for $5.

Conversely, shop extra EARLY for things, I paid 5cents an egg for this year's Easter Eggs in late January, and they are currently up to 12cents at the same store!
