What Is Still Made In America?

50
That question occurred to me today as I was driving back from teaching a social psychology class.  We had been talking about "persuasion" in marketing and we happened to get on the topic that a great deal of what we buy is made in countries other than the United States.  So, I decided to do some  research and see what sorts of products are still made in the good old USA.

As far as I could tell, there are no major brands of computers or televisions manufactured in the U.S.  There are some less familiar brands of computers such as ZT Systems.

To be fair, Booz & Co. found that about 75% of what we consume in the U.S. we make in the U.S.  But, the big stuff seems to be made overseas.  There are still some very recognizable items and brands that are yet made in the U.S.

Here is what I found.

Harley-Davidson

Baseball Bats

Kitchenaid Mixers

Steinway Pianos

Guns

Airstream

Yankee Candles

Bose

Oreck Vacuums

BMX Bicycles

Anchor Hocking Glass

Longaberger Baskets

If I missed something major, please let me know and I will add it to the article.

I didn't think any clothing was made in the United States considering how very cheaply people will work in other countries. It had to be good to see that tag :)

When I was doing the research for the article many sites noted that many LED tv wall/floor stands were made in the U.S.A. I wondered why that particular type of product was made here but couldn't find an answer. But, you did hit on a good one!

it makes sense for inexpensive but heavy things to be made locally. no matter how cheap labor is in other countries, shipping is not cheap. and its only get more expensive with the prices of fuel lately.

i think this explains TV stands. its really just a bunch of metal. its heavy but it doesn't cost very much. making something like that in china and shipping it would cost more than having a machine make it here.

You may have to pay a bit more but also check out sites like etsy.com and artfire.com for things like purses, clothing, soap and a whole lot of other things. All made by hand by the indiuval artist.
